Cars drive on all four wheels, right? Well, it’s actually a little bit more complex than that. While it’s true that vehicles use all four wheels,front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive refers to the way that the transmission transfers power from the engine to the wheels. Front-wheel drive vehicles are the most common because they are easy to design and get great gas mileage. However, you don’t get a lot of power and acceleration from a front-wheel drive vehicle.

Rear-wheel drive vehicles are designed for power, which is why muscle cars and trucks typically have rear-wheel drive. They are also a bit more complicated to design. While power is still transferred from the transmission to the rear wheels, it goes through the driveshaft to the differential to deliver power. Rear-wheel vehicles are also better for towing.
