We at Ruxer Truck Center are often asked questions about driving safely with bicyclists on the road. As we all understand that we have to share the road, it is concerning for some on how to proceed the right way. Keeping a good distance from cyclists and staying aware of your surroundings is a great start!
When you notice a bicyclist on the road, it is important to watch for the proper signals that they use. A left turn is signaled with the left hand straight out, while a right turn is a left arm up at a 90-degree angle. A cyclist may also use a left arm down at a 90-degree angle, which means that they are slowing down or about to stop. It is important to look for these signals even if they are not in your lane, so you know if they will cross paths in front of you or get into your lane.
Once you are parked, you should also check your mirrors before you open the doors of your vehicle. Checking your mirrors will help you determine if any bicyclists are using a bike path next to your car so that you won't injure them by opening a door.
